August 30 - September 1, 2008 (Labor Day Weekend) Escalante National Monument in southern Utah was created in 1996 and contains nearly 2 million acres of primordial land. This monument is an ideal location for nature photography, as it contains an endless array of natural wonders, including numerous slot canyons, natural arches, and hoodoos. During the August/September, 2008 workshop, professional photographer Grant Collier will lead participants to some of the best photographic locations in and around Escalante National Monument. Each day will consist of instructional sessions of varying lengths, along with shoots at practically every hour of the day and night. Participants will therefore have the option to choose which shoots they are most interested in, from sunrise shoots at the break of dawn to star trail shoots lasting well into the night! During this workshop, Grant will teach participants about composition, lighting, shutter speed and aperture settings, filters, tripods, film, and much more. He will also go beyond the basics and provide a list of tips and "tricks" that many of the nation's premier nature photographers use to turn good shots into great shots. Grant will also teach participants the digital imaging tools and techniques involved in creating professional-quality digital photographs. This will include determining the optimum settings for your digital camera, processing files with Lightroom and Photoshop, and preparing files for printing. Grant will also explain how to stitch photos together to produce very large images and how best to convert color images to black & white. Limited enrollment gives everyone quality time with Grant, and on-location instruction gives you first-hand experience that you can not receive in a classroom. Priced at $595 per person, this workshop provides a truly affordable way to learn the secrets of professional photographers! Price: $595 per person. Group Size: Maximum of 14 people. Minimum of 4 people. If 8 or more people sign up (as is usually the case) Grant will hire an assistant to help in the field. If 4-7 people sign up two of the scheduled shoots (either night or sunrise) will be canceled. Lodging: Lodging is NOT included in the tuition. We recommend reserving a place stay in Page, AZ on the nights of August 29 & 30 and in Tropic, Utah on the night of August 31. A list of places to stay in Page, AZ can be found: HERE A list of places to stay in Tropic, UT can be found: HERE. Since you won't be spending much time in your room during the day, we recommend the Motel 6 in Page for clean and affordable, but small rooms. There's two Best Westerns in town for those who want something a little larger. We don't currently have specific recommendations on Tropic lodging. Hiking Difficulty: We will not be doing any hikes over three miles and most of the hiking is not too difficult. However, it could be very hot during the workshop. The average temperature is 89 degrees and the record high is 100 degrees during this time. This workshop is therefore only suited for people who are in decent shape. It is generally best suited for people under the age of 60, but anyone is welcome to apply if they feel they can complete hikes in weather up to 100 degrees without endangering their health. Driving: There will be a couple hours of driving each day. A small amount of the driving will be done over moderately difficult jeep trails. A participant with a 4-wheel drive vehicle who is willing - if necessary - to transport other participants to the field locations will receive a $50 discount on their tuition. Experience Required: This workshop is suited for photographers of all levels, who are looking to learn more about nature photography. The digital imaging instruction is best suited for people who have little to moderate understanding of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. A general understanding of operating a computer and computer software is assumed. Equipment Required: Everyone must bring their own camera. A single-reflex lens (SLR) camera is recommended, but any camera will suffice. In order to work with and get immediate feedback on your images, a digital camera is recommended. But a film camera can be used as your primary camera or as a secondary camera for shooting night shots. A tripod and a laptop computer are also recommended. For additional information on this workshop, please read the Notes, Terms & Conditions
